Welcome to the updated LEGO farm animals article! There aren’t many of these, because most of them have unique shapes, meaning a new mould should be made for each and every one, meaning pricier sets. Still, the LEGO Group made enough animals to build a small farm.
Since I talked about horses in my previous article, I won’t mention them here. Apart from them, there are five different farm animals: Cows, pigs, chickens, goats and sheep. I also added ducks, which seemed appropriate.
Just like the other animal articles, I’ll update this as new animals are released. The name of the colors used here are the Bricklink colors. To see a better image of the color, please visit this link, search for the color, and click on its name to go to Rylie Howerter’s Flickr page.
LEGO Cow and Calf Figures
Cows are the first LEGO farm animals to be released. They are produced in 2009, in reddish brown and white with black spots. Appearing in Castle and City themes, you can only find them in one set. The reddish brown cow appears in another set in 2014, this time with longer horns. A medium nougat cow joins the family in 2022. It appears in two sets, in one the 1×2 gap is closed with a tile, in the other a plate.
We have three calves. One comes in 2022, with the same set as the medium nougat cow, with a tan color. The others come with Friends sets in 2024, in black and white with black spots. All of them appear in just one set (not the same one, mind you).
LEGO Pig and Piglet Figures
A pig comes into our lives in 2010, nougat colored. We see the same pig in 2011, this time with black spots. The spots turn to dark brown in 2016, a bright pink pig named Hamletta joins in 2017, and another bright pink one comes in 2020. The only difference between these two are their eye prints.
A little piglet comes in 2022. It’s bright pink colored, and only comes with one set.
The first pig from the Friends theme is from 2024. Its mould isn’t new (more on that in a minute), but its color, bright pink, is. It comes with just one set, too.
LEGO Chicken and Chick Figures
The chicken arrives at the farm in 2011 (before the egg, FYI). It has two different moulds, one with a narrow base and one with a wide base. The narrow-based chickens were last seen in 2022, the same year the wide-based ones replaced them.
Both moulds are released with and without printing. Printed narrow-based chickens come in tan, dark tan and white; unprinted ones in white, light bluish gray, flat silver and pearl gold. These are usually used as ornaments, statues or weather vanes.
The wide-based chickens are made in dark orange and white. I think the most important feature of chickens is being able to jump between System and Friends sets without undergoing any changes. The unprinted version comes in dark turquoise.
We only have one chick, coming with a Friends set. The mould it uses is the small bird mould we have seen in other sets before. It’s bright light yellow, and can be found in two sets. Funny thing is, it comes as a chick in one and a bird in other :)
LEGO Goat Figures
And here’s the legendary animal that has been the talk of AFOLs for years! It first appeared in 2011, in only one set, and kept being the first and only goat for a long while. After endless questions, the LEGO Group had to make an announcement, saying the goat mould was discarded during spring cleaning; that’s why the figure was never released again. That alone made it one of the most expensive animals for a while. To be honest, this is still the case. If you want to get the old goat, you need to spend a significant amount of money.
However, the LEGO Group surprised everyone when they released not one, but two goats in 2024. One of them is white with dark tan horns, comes with the CMF 25 series. The other is dark bluish gray with tan horns, and comes with the Medieval Town Square set (10332). Even though they don’t include it in every other set, at least we now know there’s a new goat mould and it’s possible to see it in sets again.
The System goat isn’t the only goat of 2024. Three Friends goats are released, two adults and one baby. The adults are light bluish gray and dark tan, the baby is white (but the mould isn’t new, more on that later). The adult goats have different prints as well.
LEGO Sheep and Lamb Figures
The sheep, well, actually the lamb comes with Friends sets first, in 2014. Although Bricklink lists two of them, there is no difference between the two lambs except for the very slight change in their eye color (one is blue, the other is dark azure). The System sheep joins the family in 2021, and in 2022 again but this time with an extra fleece piece. It’s possible to put this on other animals with the same width and have some fun scenes :) Our woolly sheep has a lamb, too. It’s possible to find the sheep in two, the lamb in three sets.
LEGO Duck Figures
We have a duckling, coming in 2019. Starting with yellow, it comes in bright green and dark orange in the following years. It’s mostly used as a toy, although not always. Like the chicken, it can travel between the System and Friends sets without changing.
The yellow duckling is released without any printing in 2023, appearing in three sets until now.
Special Characters
Like horses, some farm animals have a special part in Disney movies, like Hamm from Toy Story, Pua and Heihei from Moana and Valentino from Wish. And like the horses, they are LEGOfied as well.
Hamm is released in 2010. There are two different versions, one with only face printing, the other with dirt and paint printing, too. The third one listed on Bricklink is the same with the clean version, except it’s wearing a hat. If there’s another difference, I don’t see it.
Pua from Moana has three versions with different printing, coming out in 2017, 2020 and 2022. The pig from the Friends sets in 2024 uses Pua’s mould.
Heihei, again from Moana, is released in 2017 and 2020. This time both the color and printing are different. The one from 2017 uses dark green as a part of its body and tail, along with bright light orange. The 2020 version uses dark turquoise next to bright light orange, and its eye printing resembles the screen version more.
A new baby goat mould comes with the Wish sets in 2023, Valentino’s figure. Valentino is medium nougat, wearing a yellow outfit like in the movie. The baby goat in Friends sets from 2024 uses this mould.
We have a special chicken, but not from Disney. Camilla from the Muppets, coming with the Muppets CMF in 2022. It’s white, and reflects its screen counterpart really well. Camilla uses the narrow-based chicken mould.
In 2023, we see a… creature that is called a pig. It’s Picky from Sonic the Hedgehog sets, uses the Friends puppy mould, and has a light nougat color.
In addition to these, I have a custom cow I’d like to share here. I probably got it either because of my curiosity, or because I didn’t have a cow at the time. Made by Brickforge, it looks a little rough around the edges, but I think it’s really successful. Its horns are separate, like the LEGO cow. The most fun thing about it is you can remove its udder, making it possible to have a cow or a bull.
LEGO DUPLO Farm Animals
LEGO DUPLO farm animals are really rich. Throughout the years, all of them have been released with different moulds and different colors or prints. Right, let’s get to it then!
Cows
We have 8 cows in 3 different moulds, 5 calves in 2 different moulds. Starting with a cow in 1979, our first cow is rust-colored, followed by a dark orange one with a different eye printing in 1985. This mould was seen in sets until 1997. Like the first horse, I have this cow figure from my childhood, and it’s fake, too. Mine’s color is more like medium nougat than dark orange.
The next cow arrives in 1996 and appears in sets until 2007. It has two colors, white with black spots and dark orange.
The most recent cow mould which can still be found in sets today is from 2010. It’s made in white with black spots and dark orange, too. The first one has a bright pink udder, the second one, white.
The first calf is from 1996, again in white with black spots. Dark orange joins in 1998. It’s possible to see this mould until 2009.
The updated calf comes in 2010. There’s one reddish brown, two white with black spots. The white one (on the right) can still be found in sets.
Pigs
There are three adult, three baby pig moulds. The first one is a sibling to the first horses and cows. It was released in 1979, changed its eye printing in 1985. Both are produced in nougat, the second one continued to be produced until 1997.
A new mould arrives in 1996. I really like this one, probably because it looks chubbier than the others. It has a nougat color, appears in 15 sets until 2007.
The third adult pig is from 2010. Its eye printing changes in 2013, and it continues to appear in sets until 2018. These two are nougat colored. The medium nougat one released in 2015 is probably a boar, since the name of the set is Forest: Animals.
As for piglets… the first one appears in 1996. It comes with a green baseplate, joined, I think. There are other DUPLO animals like this. Since they’re not listed as having two parts, I think it’s safe to assume the animal is joined to the plate. Our piglet is medium nougat colored, appears is 21 sets until 2009.
The second and last piglet is newer, from 2021. It appears in light nougat in two sets. In 2022, it’s released in dark tan with stripes, again, as a boar. That one is only in one set.
Chickens and Roosters
The LEGO DUPLO farm animals from 1979 include a chicken and a rooster, too. The chicken is also one of the fake figures from my childhood.
Two chickens and two roosters are released in 1985. I don’t think the animal moulds are different, they look very similar, but one pair is on a baseplate and the other isn’t.
The chicken that’s still used today comes out in 2010. It appears in 8 sets until 2015. In 2018 the eyes change, and the figure makes it to present day. The rooster accompanying it is released in 2018, changes its color in 2021. The chicken has a white body and red crest. The 2018 rooster has dark blue chest and feet, bright light orange head and wings, a lime tail, an orange beak and a red crest. 2021 version changes its chest and feet color to dark azure, tail to medium azure, and beak to… yellow? Not sure about that last one, guessing the colors from the image below.
Goats
The goat takes its sweet time to join the DUPLO universe. It first appears in 2013, and all the following goats use the same mould. There are two colors, dark orange and white with dark brown spots. The only difference between the dark orange ones is their eye printing. These goats have appeared in 11 sets between 2013-2020.
Sheep and Lambs
And yet another DUPLO farm animal imitation! Yep, just like the others, this one has a fake version, too. Joke aside, even though they aren’t original figures, they’re really good. I opened my eyes and they were there, so I have them for at least 40 years. Considering I played with them as a baby, it’s not hard to imagine what they went under. Even under these circumstances, they’re still standing tall. It seems even fakes were of good quality back then… anyways…
The sheep that opens its black eyes in 1979 changes its eye printing in 1985. Unlike its siblings, this one has another version, released in 1987. Bricklink lists it as “undetermined type”. I have no idea what’s undetermined here, so I won’t be sharing its image. This mould is last seen in 1997, like the others. During that time, it appears in 26 sets (excluding the undetermined type).
A new sheep mould joins the family in 1996. Appearing in 9 sets until 2002, this sheep is more refined than the previous one. The sheep released in 2004 looks similar to this, but its face, chest, tummy and feet are dark bluish gray. It appears in 7 sets until 2009.
The first lamb arrives in 2010, with white fur and dark brown body. One with a dark bluish gray body follows in 2018, using the same mould. We can see the brown ones until 2020, but the gray one says goodbye after appearing in just one set.
The newest lamb is from 2021. It has white fur and a light bluish gray body, and it’s really cute. It only appears in 4 sets.
Ducks
The duck enters the stage in 2015. The male and female versions use the same mould. The female is medium nougat colored. One of the males has a green head with a light bluish gray body, the other has a medium azure head with a light bluish gray body.
Little fun fact: Inspired by the Mallard duck, I think these ducks are very well-designed. It’s great they distinguished between male and female, too. I don’t like the second version with a medium azure head, but the head feathers of the Mallard can be perceived as blue under certain light conditions, so I’ll allow it :)
Special Characters
The only special character I was able to find in LEGO DUPLO farm animals was Lambie from Doc McStuffins sets. She has a white body, a dark pink bow and skirt, and (I think) a bright pink face. She’s the spitting image of the character on the screen.
Farm minifigures
No, of course I’m not talking about the farmers. These are the pig and chicken costumed minifigures from the CMF series, chick costumed minifigure from smaller sets, and the bull costumed minifigure from the Chinese New Year sets. There are others as well, but let these be enough for now.
Who’s who in the farm world?
Yep, it’s time for comparisons. Here, let the images speak for themselves.
Sets worth mentioning
Although LEGO Friends sets saw the first release of many animals, when it came to the farm, they were a bit behind. The proper introduction of farm sets was made in 2024, filled with goats, baby goats, calves and chicks. It’s possible to get every farm animal species of this year by getting the Farm Animal Sanctuary (42617) and Farm Animal Vet Clinic (42632), except for the pig.
Now, let’s go back in time to a City set released in 2022. Barn & Farm Animals (60346) is truly an exceptional set. It includes a sheep, a lamb, a cow, a calf, a pig and two piglets. There’s even a squirrel as a bonus. As someone who has now devoted my collection to animals, my only wish is we get more sets like this.
This concludes our LEGO farm animals. Sorry? I said there weren’t many? Pages ago? Well, it’s true, there aren’t many species of them. What you’re missing is the author being a little too talkative. Also, there are a lot of DUPLO farm animals, that I didn’t know (always blame DUPLO when you don’t know what to say :))) ).
See you in the next article!

I thank Brickset, Bricklink, Rebrickable, Brickowl, New Elementary, Decotoys, Steinpalast, Austrian Brick Fan and eBay for providing the images of animals I didn’t have. The image of the Mallards is from here, screen counterparts of characters are from their respective Wiki pages.
Some girls play with Barbie dolls, while others create small worlds with LEGO minifigures and continue to do so when they grow up. You can probably guess which group I belong to :)
