When I opened Instagram on Friday, I saw the same thing on every LEGO page I follow: LEGO Builds Instagram Channel. I got interested, looked around, tried to get some info. Then I decided to mention it on the blog, too.
The information below is taken directly from a RLFM Jay’s Brick Blog. Feel free to read the original article here.
LEGO have just launched a brand new Instagram channel @legobuilds, a brand new content and community hub created especially for LEGO fans.
The existing @lego Instagram channel will still be LEGO’s primary channel, but @legobuilds is designed for a deeper dive into LEGO fandom, with exclusive content and community highlights that you won’t get elsewhere.
LEGO Fans are at the heart of the channel, and LEGO have promised that there’ll be plenty of different types of content for all types of fans, whether you’re a veteran collector, or brand new to the hobby!
Expect to see things like:
- Conversations with LEGO Designers
- Deep dives into new set releases
- Features of Rare Parts, retro sets, MOCs, epic builds, and more
- Builder and event spotlights
- Exclusive Insider Rewards
- Mind-blowing MOCs and builds from LEGO fans
- Unboxing classic & legendary sets from the LEGO Group’s history
- Exploring fan made displays and at-home creations
- And more!
I opened their Instagram page (are we calling it channel, now?), and they alread have 32K followers. Nothing strange about that.
Undoubtedly, this is a cool attempt by the LEGO Group. But it makes me think, will it work? I’m not even talking about the LEGO Group, by the way, it’s all about Instagram. I’ve been aware for a while that Instagram is no longer about community. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but it feels like a platform where you just “like-and-slide”. If anyone comments, it’s mosty “Oooh” “Nice” “Cool” and things like that. I have read people complaining of commenters not even reading what they have written in the caption. I remember how it was 8-10 years ago, and this version seems… shallow. I use it, too, mostly in the same way I’ve just mentioned, like & slide. But I don’t want to leave the platform because of the people I’ve met years ago.
As for community, I’ve been hanging around in another platform lately: Reddit. I haven’t been very much active in the LEGO community yet, but I love the 3D printing community. Even though I don’t always take part in conversations, even reading theirs is fun.
Anyway, that’s another matter. What I’m trying to say is, I’m just curious how this attempt will conclude. I’ve already read a few comments that approach the channel with suspicion. All I’m wondering is whether it will be a community or not. Whether the platform – or the people – will allow it.
See you in the next one!

Some girls play with Barbie dolls, while others create small worlds with LEGO minifigures and continue to do so when they grow up. You can probably guess which group I belong to :)
